Volunteering can be a great way to keep you active and feel good about giving back to your community. There are a range of different volunteer opportunities out there that you can find based on your skills and interests. Here are some benefits of taking that step.

It's good for you.
Being socially active and involved in your community into retirement is good for your sense of well-being. It helps you continue to feel connected to people, keeps your mind active, and makes you feel good about giving back.

It promotes healthy activity.
Staying active is good for your physical, emotional, and intellectual well-being. Volunteering gets you out of the house and can help you maintain a healthy, active lifestyle as you age. Also, being active through volunteering may give you the confidence and zeal to be active in other ways, including group exercise classes or social events.

Bridge a generation gap.
When older people make an effort to stay connected to the next generation, something beautiful happens. Older people reflect on the value of their lives and the wisdom earned, and young people gain invaluable life lessons, understanding, and perspective. When generations intermingle, perspective and understanding are part of the encounter, and that can be life-changing in both directions.

Feel like you have more time.
As ironic as it may sound, choosing a more active lifestyle through volunteering can make you feel like you have more time in your day. When people choose to volunteer, it can often give them a sense that they're more capable and confident. As a result of that feeling, you may find yourself getting even more things done.
